Re: [ptp-dev] IP CQs waiting on your team

Hi Greg,

I spoke with Alan today. He went over my answers to these questions, but he'll be unable to do much with respect to this project for a while. I will be moving this forward instead of him. Below are the questions (for reference), followed by my answers.

1. Please double check with the contributor concerning copyright. Past experience with contributions originating from the University of Utah indicated the university held copyright. Based on the description of the contribution, it would appear we need to gain consent from the university as well.

2. GIGUtilities.java includes a comment that says, "Code from eclipse.org to get console to print....". We would like to fully understand the origin of that content. If a derivative work was created, the original copyright header should be reinstated.

3. Several HTML help files are included which indicate: "School of Computing * 50 S. Central Campus Dr. Rm. 3190 * Salt Lake City, UT 84112 * isp-dev@xxxxxxxxxxx". Are these part of the contribution or do they related to the ISP Tool which is downloaded separately form the University Web site as was the case with HTML files related to the GEM contribution?

Answers:

1. The code was written during and under funding from the Google Summer of Code. My understanding is that Google doesn't own the copyright. In any case, Google expects the code to be added to opensource projects. I was not supported by the University of Utah at this time. Small fixes and changes have been made since, and I was/am supported by the University of Utah. Also, GIG is supported by the back-end gklee code (similar to ISP with the GEM plug-in). Gklee is not what I am contributing, but is developed specifically by the University of Utah. GIG also has optional functionality that links into a server hosted at the University of Utah. This server also has a web applet that is free to use. Thus, I'm not sure if the University of Utah has copyright, how much, etc. I can get any permissions as needed.

2. I believe that this source is from http://wiki.eclipse.org/FAQ_How_do_I_write_to_the_console_from_a_plug-in%3F I'm not sure how to properly cite works in tutorials, API specifications, or the fact that I used a similar plug-in (GEM) as a reference for how to interface with Eclipse. I can add any copyright information as needed. This specific chunk doesn't appear to have any copyright information attached to it.

3. On the html help files in question, I believe that I copied the layout from the GEM HTML help files. Any that refer to the gklee tool, should be directed to the gklee group at the University of Utah (I need to change the isp-dev email to the gklee-dev email). In other cases, this is probably an error and I'll need to change them to my own email address and/or a ptp address (for questions on the GIG plug-in itself).

I hope that these clear things up a bit. I will make the necessary changes that I know about and attach the patch to the bugzilla thread. Then I can work on any other changes that are required.

Cheers,
Brandon Gibson

Sorry for the delays, I'm starting a new semester, and have been under the weather for a while. I can go through the questions and fix what needs to be fixed. According to my records, the questions were posted to bugzilla 2 weeks ago, not 3+ weeks ago. The IPZilla likely has an older post, but I don't have access to IPZilla under my eclipse account credentials.

Cheers,

Alan,

Yes, if you could update bug 380165 with responses to the questions, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Would you like me to shed light on these questions? This contribution is from Ganesh Gopalakrishnan's group at the University of Utah and deals with formal verification of GPU kernels.

Alan Humphrey,
IPZilla records show that one or more of the projects on which you are a
committer for is in need of attention. The following CQs have been in the
'awaiting committer' status for over 3 weeks with no activity and your team
needs to take action.

  tools.ptp:

6945 Graphical Inquisitor of GPU Programs -- epl, 3 weeks ago

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your project
lead, PMC member, or the EMO <emo@xxxxxxxxxxx>
