Thanks Stephan for this great article. The SubMonitor Javadoc was already outstanding but your article covers a lot more.

In order to detect where more cancellation checks should be done (using SubMonitor.split?), I've started monitoring the calls to #isCancelled. See bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=470175 for details.
