Re: [platform-ui-dev] Article on workbench internals

I'm pretty sure neither of us is going to change our minds on this subject, so I'm gonna quit with this one. ;-}

The Eclipse Roadmap and Architecture Plan have pretty slides for managers. It is possible, after about six clicks, to drill down to the Platform UI dev resources page (the Architecture Plan is just a detour) and, should one chance to click on the right link, get some meat. Personally, I probably never would have found it except for this thread.

Does it belong with the other articles? Probably not. But there should be some central location like the articles page devoted to Eclipse Architecture with a capital "A", with the implication that each project should have a contribution along the lines of

http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/%7Echeckout%7E/platform-ui-home/workbench_design/Inside%20the%20workbench.html

Maybe they can't all be that good, but it would be a worthy model.

Moving this comment to the phoenix project.

The high level architecture of the various eclipse projects and components, and how they interrelate, is well documented in the Eclipse Roadmap (one of the first links off of http://eclipse.org) and the Architecture Plan it refers to. The Platform Plug-in Developers guide also gives a good overview (and details) of the platform architecture, and we have many articles in the main articles section discussing the various components and how to use them. We also talk about the Architecture of eclipse at eclipsecon and other conferences.

More detailed documents describing the internal design of individual components are not of general interest, and belong off of the corresponding component pages. I don't think plug-in developers would be well served by posting internal design documents for the entire, rapidly growing, set of eclipse components in the main articles section.

Hidden in plain sight? ;-}

I went to NetBeans Day at JavaOne, where speakers were delighted to talk about the NetBeans Architecture, with a capital A. Eclipse seems to hide its architecture under a bushel. It's a shame.

I agree it should be published in the open, but not in the general articles section, just of the Platform UI development resources page (as

it already is):

"Platform UI team" is not a closed set. Anyone can make a contribution to Eclipse, or at least try to; the more information people have the more likely you are to get quality contributions.

Everything about Eclipse should be out in the open and freely available.

To satisfy Nick's concern, his second paragraph could be added to the article at the top.

Ed, the intent of this article is to capture the design of the workbench

internals for the Platform UI team.
Developers using the workbench should not need to know most of this.
I'm inclined to leave it as a link off of the Platform UI development resources page, and not publish it on the main articles page.

Note also that, since this describes internals and not API, that the design may change at any time.

This is a nice article, mind if I link to it from the Eclipse Corner articles page?

I've put together a quick article describing the workbench internals.
This may be helpful for anyone trying to understand the platform UI
code base. Download it here:
