I indeed did have strange problems with my workspace so deleted the entire ~/
workspace directory, imported my projects, reconfigured eclipse and added all 
my update sites manually. This solved the problems except that every time I 
start up eclipse I get this "finishing installation ... please wait" pop up.

So, ok, I temporarily renamed ~/workspace, when starting the run-time 
workspace eclipse prompts me to update my workspace which should have been 
created by an old version....?? Well, eclipse itself just created that 
workspace when I just started it...
