From your motivating examples, I think you are trying to do too
much in one window.  Have you tried using two windows open side by
side (in a tiled formation) instead?  Most window managers have
hot keys to switch to the most recently used window (like Eclipse's
Shift-F6).

If you don't like using multiple windows, what is it that you find
awkward about it?
