Of course, all this assumes that opening editors on startup is a problem. Versus, say, reading the plugin.xml files, etc. It would be interesting to see a breakdown.

Something as simple as providing a progress indicator or textual display on the splash screen showing what's being loaded during startup might help users' frustration over the startup time.
