During M8 and M9 the text team will work on folding in text editors.
The concrete plan for M8 will be available next week. In order to gain
additional familiarity with the text and editor components you could
work on some of the smaller enhancement requests. This would be a
great help for us. Let us know which ones you like to work on. This
mailing list is fine for discussing text and editor issues.
Apropos contributing: I recently learned from Daniel Megerts comment on
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=42613 that there actually
*is* a test suite for platform-text, but it is -- as of yet -- internal
to IBM/OTI. Making that test suite public and accessible from the
Eclipse CVS repo would be a very important step in getting more outside
contributions for the text components, and in the long term extending
committership to people outside of the IBM firewalls.
Personally, I feel unsure about posting patches without corresponding
test cases, and I'm sure you guys feel unsure about committing patches
without tests (although you can at least run the existing test suite to
find if anything was broken, which outsiders cannot).
