Just for fun, can you try the 3.4M3
build (available at http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/S-3.4M3-200711012000/index.php)?
 This release contains a fix for a very similar scenario that was
happening on 64-bit windows (redraw problems when certain other apps were
also running).  Even if you're not on 64-bit windows it's possible
that you're seeing the same problem, depending on what express.exe is doing.
