RE: [platform-swt-dev] Appropriate list to ask a basic SWT question

I was handed a Java desktop application and asked to make it accessible using the Access Bridge and SWING... after nearly four months of research and coding the application was as useless as snow tires in Bermuda. Eventually I stumbled upon Eclipse and ultimately SWT. I convinced my project leader to let me try the same application with SWT and about a month later even with the learning curve the application went into testing. So I guess the proof is in the pudding when first of all I can use Eclipse with relatively few issues and produce fully accessible applications for screen readers and Braille displays.

Nice to meet you as well.

Jim

Nice to meet you, Jim!
I'm glad that SWT works for you.

I was working under the assumption that this list was for those of us who use SWT in projects, however I find this list extremely informative.

I'm the sole blind developer with the Canadian Revenue Agency and I'm actively pressing for a replacement of the Sun Access Bridge in favour of the SWT approach to accessibility.

It was intended to be a place to discuss SWT implementation issues.

In practice, whenever any interesting discussion starts, we immediately create a Bugzilla bug for it so that the entire discussion can be captured in one place (i.e. nothing is lost in random email threads).

In addition, if we track everything in Bugzilla, then when the bug is closed, it means that the issue is resolved.

...may I ask a rather silly question: What is the intended purpose of this list... all joking aside?

Basic SWT questions are best asked on the SWT newsgroup.

First, you might want to look through http://www.eclipse.org/swt/

and maybe run some snippets, get the eclipse examples and try them, look at the FAQ, and read a few articles on the documentation page.

If you still have a question, the newsgroup is here: news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.platform.swt

Have fun!
