I ask a rather silly question: What is the intended purpose of this list... all
joking aside?

Basic
SWT questions are best asked on the SWT newsgroup.
First, you might want to look through
http://www.eclipse.org/swt/
and maybe
run some snippets, get the eclipse examples and try them, look at the FAQ, and
read a few articles on the documentation page.
If you still have a question, the newsgroup is here:
news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.platform.swt
