Re: [platform-swt-dev] MacOS X support in 3.0

Get a nightly or 2.1.1 build and add your comments to the PR. Include the
hardware you are running
and amount of memory.

Well, hush my mouth. I've just downloaded the nightly build and it is considerably faster and more responsive. The menus activate more responsively, files open quicker, changing tabs is more streamline... excellent work people!!

Let's see how much further we can push it for 3.0!

I'll file a new PR if I find anything major.

Well done everyone

I agree. There is a performance item on the Eclipse 3.0 plan and the Mac
should be covered by it.

Specifically, I'm thinking of: startup time, opening files, changing
between file tabs, code suggestion (apple+space) - from the top of my
head.

It's unclear which of these items are SWT related and which are Eclipse.
For example, the issue
changing tabs is talked about in:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=37160

We've done some work on apple+space:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=29642

May I interject?

I've been using Eclipse now for about a year and on the three major
platforms (Win, Linux, OS X). It is really great to see such support
for OS X and to get Eclipse on OS X supporting the functionality it
currently does, but the biggest problem I have is still with
performance.

In my opinion, I'm more than happy to sacrifice some of the more
esoteric features of Eclipse 3.0 if there is a chance to devote some
developer's time to addressing performance issues. If our feature-set
is not synonymous with that of 3.0 on other platforms, then that is
something I can personally grin and bear.

Now, I understand that, generally, us Apple'ers have lesser-powered
hardware that our sibling platforms, but there are elements of Eclipse
that just shouldn't be that sluggish (and I'm working on a 12" 876MHz
G4 Powerbook with 640MB of RAM).

Specifically, I'm thinking of: startup time, opening files, changing
between file tabs, code suggestion (apple+space) - from the top of my
head.

The work everyone has done to date is amazing and keeps the platform
viable for development, but what I am essentially wondering is if there
is any remit in the product roadmap to address performance and
optimisation?

Thanks all! Keep up the good work!

To be honest, there is only a small list of things that are not yet
implemented on the Mac:

 - Printing
 - Accessibility
 - DBCS and BIDI
 - Program (access to Registry type capabilities)

(please correct me if you see any other large items that are missing)

Drag and Drop is almost complete and Tracker has been implemented.

While the 3.0 plan was being debated, allot of work kept going on in
the
trenches and a large amount of what we wanted to include for 3.0
actually
got done before the plan was announced.

We spent a fair amount of effort in 2.1 to get the Mac port to a
reasonable state and the plan just reflects the fact that we need to
focus
on some other areas (that will be across all platforms) for now.

A deferred item does not mean it will not happen for 3.0 - if we get
some
help from outside or find some extra time ourselves, we will continue
to
make progress. It just means we can't make any promises.

Not to be an nag, but, to repeat, what was the reasoning behind the
lack of support for OS X? Is it too much work? Is it too much work
given the size of the user community? Is it that Apple hasn't yet
confirmed that they will be using the PowerPC970? ;)

Really, I'm curious.
