The startup.jar is missing in the M5 version basebuilder because it
doesn't exist anymore and we have updated our scripts to accomodate
this.
Well, yours have but what about other projects who happen to
re-use basebuilder?
The equinox launcher has been renamed to
org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.jar as a convenience factor for the platform releng team's
scripts. This is similar to the case where have renamed
org.eclipse.pde.build in basebuilder so we don't have to update our scripts each
time we update the version of pde build.

point, but why not rename / copy it to ../startup.jar instead of a new name that
has never been there before?

make like easier for downstream clients...
Not
that it would be important for me (I have updated my build scripts from
startup.jar to plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.jar through a global
query/replace operation which happened to find 10 matches, but others might want
to have the good ol' startup.jar...
