Re: [platform-help-dev] Synchronize Navigation Button

Steve,

Thanks for the bug report, I just fixed it.
It looks like we've got a regression here, as I remember Erik Hennum got it
working a while ago.
We could implement autosynchronization, but there are some issues:
- how to know that a page has been navigated via a hyperlink
- cross-frame access for content pages that are not part of the plugins
- timing issues (what happens when synchronization takes a while, and the
user quickly navigates to another link)
- etc.
So, in my opinion, it is better to provide support for auto-synchronization
as we do now (provided it works :-), then have it built-in.

Dorian,

Thanks for your response - most helpful. I just tried getting autosync to
work, but there appears to be a problem with the JavaScript in livehelp.js
(in M3 build). Bug 27823 details this problem:

http://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/buglist.cgi?bug_id=27823

Even after fixing my local copy of livehelp.js, I still wasn't able to get
this working.

I think I would prefer to see the auto-synchronization enabled as a switch
within plugin.xml. I don't know how you would implement this (by
dynamically adding the four lines of JavaScript at runtime?), but it seems
as though we could run into trouble if we forget to add those four lines
(as a post-processing task) to a number of topics.

Has anybody else been successful in getting this to work? I wonder what
I'm doing wrong... : - (

Thanks,

Steve

Correction: feature 13464 was done in 2.1, in milestone M1, not in 2.0 as
mentioned below.

Steve,

The feedback so far indicates that people really like the synchronize
feature. They want the button to be more visible, otherwise it takes them a
little while to discover this function.
Synchronization is relatively expansive, especially when having to
synchronize topics from a TOC that is not currently opened. There is
support for auto-synchronization, but authors must enable that in their
content pages. See feature
http://dev.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=13464 that is already available
in 2.0.

Hello,

One of my colleagues has shown an interest in the Synchronize Navigation
button within the Eclipse Help system recently. He asked me to pose the
following question to the mailing list for discussion:

"Synchronize Navigation: Do you have any feedback from users as to how
useful or usable they find the synchronize navigation button?"

Will the behaviour of navigation synchronization be the same in future
releases of the help system as it is now? Are there any plans to automate
the synchronization of the navigation tree when following links between
topics?

Thanks for any comments you may have on this issue.

Best wishes,

Steve
