Re: [platform-doc-dev] The changed arrow in all views

The contribution partially (completely for the purpse of images) implements the http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/~checkout~/platform-help-home/proposals/platform-specific-docs.html proposal.

On the help system side, help now support platform specific docs and images placed under /ws or /os directories. ws is searched before os and before nl directory.  Note that there is no support for searching /nl/ws or such, so translated and at the same time platform specific images (quite a number of possible combinations) would need to be placed in either ws or nl directory of NL or WS specific fragment, for product that ships non English, non Windows images.

On the docs side, contribution included path with all images having their sizes removed and converted to PNG format.

I don't think the actual platform specific screenshot have been contributed to Eclipse, neither we have a place to store them.

So in 3.1 it is possible, for example, to add a fragment with a /ws/gtk directory containing screenshots taken on GTK.  If Eclipse ships with Windows screenshots by default as in the past, it is no longer a limitation for products wanting to see different.  Screenshots are sizeable and should be kept in fragments.  Having more that one set of images in the plug-ins would significantly increase their size.  I believe, the best thing to do in Eclipse for 3.1 is to ship English/Windows images in the doc plug-ins as in the past.  If we later receive or produce set of images for other platforms, then we can build and publish optional fragments as we do with translations.

Do the RedHat images get contributed back into our doc projects [apologies
for being a clueless noob]? If they are already doing these, it would
certainly make sense for us to ship them.

The technology definitely exist to ship platform-specific images thanks to
the RedHat contribution to the Help component.

This is actually a very good question that we should consider. I know
there are several Eclipse customers who do not ship on Windows.

We have the following options
1) Do everything on Windows and then be sure we have no sizes set in our
doc. At some point we could create platform specific fragments that
replace these screenshots with screenshots taken on the other platforms.
This way products shipping on some platform we have not gotten to yet can
do thier own (and hopefully contribute them back)

2) Do a mix of screenshots in our main doc in all 3 major platforms  (XP,
GTK and on the Mac).

I think the first option is a better one for consistencies sake - anyone
already relying on our doc lives in this world. That also allows
contributors like the RedHat guys to ship doc more consistent with thier
products lines.

Opinions? Either way I think we should remove any size references from our
doc markup - this has always been our policy and we now have an even
better reason to follow it.

In 3.1 we have changed the menu down arrow in all of views from a black
icon to a white one. Are we going to have to retake all of our view
related screenshots as a result?
