I think access to resources in an explorer-like view is being addressed for
3.2 by the DSDP project under its Target Management subproject.  Among
other things it allows the exploration of remote resources, and one of the
use cases I believe talks about being able to access local resources as a
special case.  The approach introduces another hierarchical view to look at
those resources.  Ideally, this will be available as a separate feature
that doesn't require much of the other DSDP infrastructure.
