Andre, if I wanted to start looking at the source code, would I just
need the org.eclipse.compare project, or are there others?

Yes, org.eclipse.compare contains the generic (language independent)compare functionality,

org.eclipse.jdt.internal.ui.compare some Java specific stuff.
