Hi,
I've made some more research.
As it turns out, everything is downloaded just fine. The error has 
nothing in common with the URL that it displays... I get the same error 
when I install using URL's with the file protocol. Some monitoring with 
lsof -p <pid> revealed that the update manager, after downloading all 
features and plugins, makes an attempt to establish a connection with 
localhost:80. As far as I can see, that's the only possible cause of the 
error that I get.

Now the question is, why would the update manager attempt to establish a 
http connection to localhost? And why does it fail with a "500 Server 
Error" when I run it on dev.eclipse.org?
