Hi,

Have you tried following AndyP's getting started guide: http://andypiper.co.uk/2012/03/10/paho-gets-started/
This includes the list of packages you need to install on ubuntu for it all to just work - all standard packages that are freely available.

I'm away from my laptop this weekend so can't provide more direct help, but hopefully Andy's post covers everything you need.
