AFAIK not (if you are using Tycho, can't say for other build systems), should work similar to the IDE setup. See http://www.vogella.com/tutorials/EclipseTycho/article.html#maventycho_rootlevelfeatures

Is there any documentation on how to setup and build an RCP app (e.g. plugins, features, product, p2 config) to be able to do an 'in place' upgrade using p2?   Eclipse does this (of course), but I would like to do it for an RCP app, and want to understand how to structure things to allow it.
