Thanks for the advice, Paul/Brian.
I've tried both, the 0.0.0.qualifier and p2 query. 0.0.0.qualifier didn't generate the category for my new features. p2 query works fine. I'll go with p2 query for now.
Paul,
Are there any document/information on the syntax of this p2 query?

In following-up on Paul's comment about embedding category queries, I came across bug 232432, submitted by David Williams.  It notes that you can simply specify just the feature id, and omit the url and version attributes, to pick up the latest version of a feature.
