Hi Miles,
An install can run without a profile; it just can't be managed.
For example, try installing something in the UI or via dropins and you should run into problems.

Hi Pascal,
Just as an experiment I deleted all the files. Eclipse seems to start fine.
Thoughts?

These files provide your history of installation and the state of your current installation (the most recent file).
You just need to keep the most recent file and you can safely remove the other ones.
Right now we have no particular tool to do this, however I think there was a bug report but I can't seem to find it.

Hi All,
Some of our users are beginning to complain about large files under this directory burning up their quota. Can this directory be cleaned out? If so how should one go about this?
