RE: [p2-dev] P2 UI: Uninstall button greyed out for some IUs but not others.

I have created an ant based cross platform eclipse installer for developers at my company. For 3.3 this worked by unzipping a vanilla classic install onto the user's machine and then using the standalone update manager from this to install a list of features sourced from various internal update sites (e.g. perforce plugin). This was pretty quick: ~7 minutes.

My plan, with 3.4, was to use the director app to install both the IDE (from an internal Eclipse repo mirror) and a list of IUs we wanted in the base install. However, I never managed to get a director install to work from the internal repo (reported to this group in thread "Installing eclipse from the command line") and when I used it to install the list of IUs it pushed the install time up from ~15 minutes (using the standalone updater) to ~60 minutes. Admittedly, I used the director app to install the IUs one at a time, which is probably slower than if I had created an IU for the feature group and just installed that, but I was told that if I used a custom IU bundle I would have to produce updates to this in order to push updates to the IUs it contained. I did not want to have to do this - just wanted to update the internal sites (mirrors and proprietary) and have my users discover any updates.

Does this help?

Miles

What you are experiencing is as best as it will get in term on interaction between update manager and p2.
As for speed, I would be interested in understanding where you feel there is a difference and the magnitude we are talking about.

I actually installed these items using the standalone update manager. This was much faster than using the p2 director.

Is there no way of getting P2 to take ownership for such items so that it can be used to manage them? (I notice that items I have updated using P2 become uninstallable.)

This would happen for items which have been installed via the drop-ins mechanism. p2 assumes that if you are going install things by yourself, then you will update and uninstall them as well.
