Re: [orion-dev] new header/layout released, more to come

Hi, Boris!

we've always had the footer, and it's always been pinned to the bottom, but it grew a little to accomodate some dynamic content, so perhaps it's more noticeable now that we are doing this.
And John is right, the only reason to pin it vs. making a fluid footer would be because it currently has some content in it that we wanted out of the header. With just static content, it would not have to be pinned (and could get fatter and fatter without guilt).

The basic discussion of layout is on the wiki. [1] To unpin the footer we need to decide where things like progress, task list, status should live.
They've been causing a lot of noise up in the header, so several folks suggested to try the footer (like eclipse, and thus more IDE-ish). So this is an experiment to see how it plays.

I agree it feels more "IDEy" when dynamic content appears in the footer. I'm not married to the idea at all (and it's trivial to change), but since several people had suggested it, I wanted to give it a try and get feedback...

There is related discussion in these bugs [2]

Didn't we always have a footer? I think the only change here is a new link was added to the footer.

Most web pages have some kind of footer, but I guess the difference you are referring to is that normally you have to scroll to the bottom of the page content to see the footer, rather than having it "outside" the scrollable content area. That way it doesn't compete for screen real estate with the main page content. That makes sense to me, although it would mean we can't put anything important like progress messages down there.
