[ohf-dev] FYI: caBIG Workflow to the Architecture Workspace

Monica Martin of Sun (who works with the OASIS ebXML Business Process TC, among others) passed this along to me.

Earlier this week I spoke to the annual meeting of caBIG  (cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid), a community of cancer researchers striving to create an interoperable information grid in which they can share research data. During my presentation I literally had seconds to show a slide listing our BPM specifications.

I call this to your attention because of that group's interest in workflow and business process notations. Within a CD I received was a Workflow Requirements Proposal, drafted by caBIG's Architecture Workflow SIG. The intent of that document is stated as follows:

"This paper will introduce a recommendation for caBIG Workflow to the Architecture Workspace. It will first define the need for workflow within caBIG, and delineate the scope of the proposed solution. It will then lay out the proposal in the form of a systems overview. Finally it will call out any unresolved issues and summarize the proposal."

Furthermore, from the paper's scope:

"There is a wide spectrum of technologies and languages that in some way implement or leverage workflow. In this recommendation, we do not propose to select one language or one implementation as the only way to perform workflow on the caBIG grid. Instead, we aim to lay out the requirements that the domain workspaces have for workflow."

I bring this to your attention because I don't see any reference to BPMN, BPDM or our other BPM specifications and, in addition, it's my understanding that you are revisiting the Workflow RFP. caBIG organizationally has adopted MDA as an approach and I think it's important that BMI DTF touch base with their Workflow SIG as an information resource. To that end I've taken the liberty of posting the full document as

http://doc.omg.org/bmi/2006-04-02

If you equally feel this is important to pursue further, I'll be happy to assist in locating contacts within caBIG.

Regards,

Fred
