The pom.xml is currently pointing to egit/updates:

       <repository>
         <id>egit</id>
         <layout>p2</layout>
         <url>http://download.eclipse.org/egit/updates/</url>
       </repository>

should egit updates pick the latest 1.0.0 ?

no, that's still latest stable release 0.12 since 1.0 isn't yet released 

(we have to wait for the release review).

Latest (final) 1.0 is in Indigo RC4
