Re: [mylyn-dev] Contributor Reference: replace Self-hosting and Self-hosting for Luna (and_newer) with Oomph?

Sam,

is it OK to leave the documentation but no longer update the *bootstrap*.target, *.p2f , … files.

Maybe we should document that we prefer to use Oomph.

It's not the target I'm concerned with, it's the development environment. I personally don't want to use a 4.x development environment due to the issues I mentioned, so I have concerns about removing the documentation for setting up such an environment.

Why would Oomph not support provisioning a 3.x based target? I'm not sure why we would care to provision 3.x for development, at least I wouldn't make that the recommendation or provide documentation to support that.

I agree that we don't need to document how to self-host, but I'm not sure we should remove documentation about how to get setup to develop Mylyn without Oomph. I assume Oomph does not support Eclipse 3.x and when I tried 4.4 recently (provisioned using Oomph) I found it to be much slower (painfully slow) and full of UI glitches where parts of a view just disappear.

We should aim for making it as easy as possible for contributors to get started with the code. Oomph is the best tool to support that and I agree that nightly/weekly builds are sufficient for consuming the latest Mylyn on a regular basis.

Anyone will still be able to bootstrap of course but we don't need to maintain separate documentation and target files etc. any longer.

Hi,

the Wiki has the two sections
* Self-hosting
* Self-hosting for Luna (and_newer)

Now where we have Oomph for an easy setup of an workspace and nightly tests I see no reason that we need this.

My plan is to replace the Self-hosting sections with an Detail of how use Oomph

Thoughts?
