Re: [modeling-pmc] New Modeling Project Branding

Hi Cedric,

thanks for your thoughts. I guess I understand your point.
I also agree with your list of the most important properties of the modeling project.

But a logo just can't transport this meaning. It is a common misunderstanding that it is the purpose of logos to transport meaning.
A logo has primarily to ensure recognition and identification.
And second it may visually connect to something meaningful.

The proposed logo definitely does this job. It is simple and as thus recognizable and it clearly relates to Eclipse (at least the commonly preferred one with the crescent).
Furthermore the puzzle indicates that the project is the umbrella of closely related sub projects that interact.
I guess the puzzle is a common metaphor for that and is in no way associated with 'game' and 'childness' while the roundness is easily understood as being due to the curvature of the ball.
And last not least it's style is recognized as being up to date.

So I would say the proposed logo in an excellent way fulfills the requirements.

good initiative ! Now a few comments :

AFAIU this concept is about presenting Modeling as a collection of pieces which are working together, which it is - indeed - yet this is true of pretty much any top level project.

The jigsaw puzzle concepts convey the ideas of childness and games (especially with such roundness). I would not say this is the thing I want people to think when looking at Eclipse Modeling.

What impression do we want to give ? My top ones ordered by most important to less important would be :

1°) the foundations for building your own greater things
2°) maturity, reliability
3°) pieces of technologies working together
4°) it's related to Eclipse

Don't you agree with this list ? If I get to pick a single one, I would rather have people understand the "foundation" thing  than the fact that it's components working together.

That being said there is real work and involvement in these proposals already and criticisms is always easy. I'll try to get a few more concept sketches proposals today to argue my point.

Hi,

A friend of mine in Berlin is a graphic designer and I was thinking, given we have a nice new Eclipse logo, maybe it's time to update the modeling project's logo as well.

What do you folks think of these?

Of course we'll need board approval for derivatives of the Eclipse logo, but I thought I'd collect opinions about it first.

Regards,
Ed
