Re: [modeling-pmc] New project proposal Technical Architecture Modeling (TAM)

Hi Ed,

I’ve attached a new version of the proposal. This version contains the list of interested parties. Furthermore, I changed the focus of the project from TAM to the more general FMC (subset of UML + FMC = TAM) resulting  in a higher relevance for other parties and the community. TAM uses the Block Diagram from FMC and its implementation will be the initial contribution from SAP.

I am looking forward to your comments regarding the proposal and I would be happy if you could tell me what the next steps are. I understood that we are currently in the pre-proposal phase and the proposal needs to be accepted and published by the EMO. What is missing to perform this “official submission”? What about a second Mentor?

Kind regards,

Benjamin

Benjamin,

Dear PMC,

I’ve contacted the EMO in order to get some feedback on an early draft of the proposal (see attachment) and to determine the right parent project. I did not know that the PMC must be contacted first, sorry for that.

Wayne is a very helpful guy, so talking to him first is never a bad idea.

I did not intend to bypass you.

My confusion was primarily driven by the heavy use of the word "proposal" in conjunction with a missing proposal attachment.

FMC and TAM are not specific to SAP but they are being used by many other companies (not only SAP partners). Some of them are listed in this link: http://www.fmc-modeling.org/consortium. However, these languages are not standardized by a standardization body.

It will be good to get permission from some of these other organizations so they can be listed as interested parties.

We already have a first implementation of the modeling tool and the metamodel based on Ecore and Graphiti.

That sounds good.

The proposal looks generally good to me.  Typically the scope section is one of the most important aspects of a proposal so it will be good to good to crisp that up a little bit.  E.g., what specifically do you mean be "Modeling of FMC..." and "Modeling the TAM subset..."?   Does this mean supporting graphical editors for those things?  Only graphical editors?

Extensibility of tools and frameworks is an important aspect of an Eclipse project, so some wording to highly how this project will facilitate extensibility would be a good idea.  E.g., you could mention that an Ecore model for FMC block diagrams can be used to facilitate interchange, integrate with established frameworks, such as EMF compare, and to facilitate the development of addition tools that all a common underlying representation.  Do you intend the tools themselves to be extensible in some way?  If so, it would be good to highlight that.

As I said, in general the proposal looks good, and I'm definitely willing to help mentor the project.

Kind Regards,

Benjamin

Dear Modeling PMC,

I’ve sent a new project proposal to the EMO which is strongly related to the Eclipse Modeling Project.

Normally project proposals (at least official ones) involve the hosting PMC before they're submitted to the EMO...

It depends on how you define normally. I am the first one to receive a lot of project proposals. Many of our processes are difficult to navigate and I am oftentimes the first to learn about a proposal.  I do not accept or process proposals that haven't got the blessing of the PMC. In this case, I read through the proposal, offered minor feedback on the content and pointed him to the PMC (like I normally do).
