[modeling-pmc] RE: FW: Europa Fall Maintenance: MDT component contribution problems

Nick,

I don't think we can remove EODM entirely from Europa at this point, but we can probably just not release a new maintenance version, as you suggested.

Cheers,

OK, I'll update the wiki to reflect this fact.

Considering the currently uncertain schedule about the transfer, I think
it's better to drop it.

What about Europa Winter Maintenance in late February [1] ? Will you be
dropping out of that too, or simply not contributing a .2 release?

Kenn:

On Sept 18, I sent you a quick nag-note to remind you that EuroFM was this
week, and to light a fire under Lei and Michael to get their bits published
on time, including some nagging housekeeping bugs (like incubation
conformance). You immediately sent a note to the MDT mailing list, so I
have to assume your people were aware of the schedule.

Copied below, that note also included a list of bugs they needed to fix.
One of them, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=201491 , was
"fixed" by Lei (but not mentioned in the bug history between 08-30 and
09-20) and promptly caused the Sept 20 Europa build to fail. I fixed this
for them, explained the problem, and he closed the bug... which I reopened
because the same underlying condition is still there for their 0.8.1
branch.

The other EODM bugs are closed, except 195782 which is ASSIGNED and
therefore should be done, but has yet to be verified and closed. I fear the
only way this will be done is if *I* do it for them.

Over in UML2 Tools, of the three bugs below, the first is ASSIGNED (but was
never promoted and therefore never verified/closed), and the last two are
untouched. I worked with Michael to get bug 201840 sorted out, but left it
to him to promote a build last week with the fix and close the bug himself.
I'm still waiting for that build. (See that bug for the extended story.)

Today was the release of Europa Fall Maintenance, and like in June, it went
very smoothly for the 3 MDT components that published their builds on time.
UML2 Tools is missing, and EODM has the RC build that *I* published for
them in there, but no final R build, as you can see from the timestamps
here: http://dash.eclipse.org/~bfreeman/europa/ .

To quote a few of the Must Dos for Europa:

9. Project representatives must attend the planning meetings and conference
calls - you have to be involved to be involved.
11. Build team members from each project will provide communication
channels: phone, mail, IM, IRC and will be available during to-be-specified
crucial integration times
13. Projects that have demonstrated an inability to synchronize with Europa
milestones by M6 will be removed from the Europa simultaneous release
unless the remaining Europa projects vote to retain said project.

It's not up to me to point fingers at people, just to point out the facts.
Given their track record, and the fact that Europa Winter Maintenance
coincides w/ Ganymede M5 (late February), should we perhaps use that date
as a checkpoint whereupon if these two components have not properly
demonstrated commitment to the process, communication, and synch required
to participate, they're booted from Ganymede? That would be the 'three
strikes' approach, but as I said, I'm not the PMC here, so I'll let you
guys decide how to handle this unfortunate situation and the bad PR it may
generate.

The third strike could also be much sooner if on October 3 they miss
publishing their M2 builds (though the actual Ganymede rules state
participation by M4 is required).

Thoughts?

Kenn:

You probably already know about these issues, but just in case your life at
Embarcadero has gotten distracting, here's a quick recap.

Next week should the be final bits for Europa Fall Maintenance (or EuroFM
as I've taken to calling it -- insert your own radio station ID joke here).

Here's the important dates for your +1/+2 components. Please nag Lei and
Michael to fix their outstanding build/compliance issues in time for next
week. Most are trivial fixes, requiring little time to execute.

Europa +0 +1 +2 Europa
Fall 09/24 09/26 09/28 09/28

Ganymd +0 +1 +2 EPP Europa
M2 09/21 09/26 10/03 10/05 10/09

Open/Assigned bugs include:

EODM:
[191537] Feature/plug-in versions need to be changed to 0.9.0
[201491] EODM 0.x.1 has all 0.x.0 features (something should have
incremented!)
[195369] SDK feature does not contain doc feature
[195782] Feature icons need be provided for all EODM features

UML2 Tools:
[201840] Incubation conformance for MDT-UML2Tools
[174296] UML2 Tools build should not log @unchecked warnings
[182396] SDK's .doc plugin contains no javadoc!

Once bug 201840 is fixed, you can finally acheive 'incubation conformance'
and have that red slash removed from the projects page. I believe that also
lets you do the parallel IP thing for new components such as OCL Tools.

BTW, EMF plans to drop out final 2.3.1 bits this week to EuroFM and our
first 2.4.0 bits to GanyM2.

Thanks,

Nick
