Re: [m2m-iwg] IFTTT: The San Francisco Startup Lets Anyone Control The Internet of Things

Arlen, the IFTTT team is working on APIs as we speak, but I have a feeling they're going to "walk before they run" when it comes to opening up the platform to a broad range of external apps, so as to minimize risk and support issues (unless they come up with some type of monetization model). Part of the challenge is that it would require some code running within their cloud (though there are plenty of ways to mitigate those risks). Alternatively, they could build out some configurable but ultra generic API invokers/trigger endpoints, but that would somewhat defeat the elegant simplicity that IFTTT offers today (it would be fine for coder types, but not for the average user). Will be curiously watching how it all plays out.

I must admit that it kinda bugs me, though, when journalists create headlines that jack up the hype meter to get views/hits, at the expense of the inevitable disappointment when reality falls short. But that's SOP in the Silicon Valley media, it seems...

Indeed, I really like the idea of the IFTTT/MQTT bridge. Due to the Twitter API constraints, IFTTT may be looking for just an avenue....
