It works from Eclipse when I use this update URL:

http://download.eclipse.org/technology/m2e/milestones/1.1/

Do I need to manually uninstall the existing version (if so, how do I do that?) prior to updating from Eclipse, or the Eclipse will automatically take care of version management?

The link works for me. You need to use eclipse install new software dialog to use it.

You can't install two versions of m2e simultaneously. Either uninstall the old one or create new eclipse installation to work with milestone builds.
