I quite sympathize. I think that breaks the history view in some cases completely.

For instance, the example I gave at https://wiki.eclipse.org/EGit/New_and_Noteworthy/5.6#History_View:_Select_the_Branches_to_Show
(using the FreeBSD repo) doesn't work anymore. I can't even find the origin/stable/11 branch anymore. :-(

When I revert https://git.eclipse.org/r/#/c/157526/ in JGit everything is back to normal and the
history view shows a reasonable, usable history again.
