Re: [jdt-dev] Time for mentoring and reviewing

Hi Gayan,

First of all, thanks to your patience and determination and also your understanding that the JDT team is overloaded. JDT team, especially the compiler part, now has stricter deadlines due to the six month Java release cadence which leaves us with little or no time for our technical debts or to attempting a new feature. And many thanks to Andrey as well who have been reviewing and taking up jdt bugs. Given the short time, we did have to give priority of reviews for patches that are complete or nearly complete.

Also, Agree with you on that the time for handholding was pretty limited. And with Java 16 deadline in Q1 2021, it may become tighter. However, we will try to close 562695 in 4.19 time frame. 569026 is a major enhancement and given our deadline, 4.19 time frame may not be possible unless someone volunteers to help through the closure.

Thanks once again for being patient.

Regards,
Manoj.

Hi All, Thanks for the suggestions, But i do think someone needs... Hi All,
Thanks for the suggestions, But i do think someone needs to step-up. Someone time i feel why the hell i'm so after Eclipse trying to get people into helping and improving JDT while i can happily go and use Intellij which solves all the problems i'm trying to solve in Eclipse JDT. But unfortunately i cannot make up my mind and just go away without trying to do something.

Recently i started this https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=569026 which i need some help from reviewing and pointing into right direction with JDT architecture.
This is another issue https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=562695 which i'm waiting for help.

Seems like all the senior members who can help me around these two right now is busy. I mean thats not that healthy for the project, because if we don't have another layer the same people will burn with work forever. We can't depend on the same set of people forever, we need to prepare the next generation inline to carry the work forward.

I only see this in JDT, I have contributed for m2e and lsp4e and the feedback loop was really fast on those projects.

Best regards,
Gayan.

They knowledge & experience in JDT is irreplaceable, and they contribution is highly needed.

Come on, it is Christmas time soon, I have a wish :-)

Gayan,

I understand where you are coming from and I appreciate your recent contributions.

The gap you are talking about wasn't always there. At least wasn't as big as it is now.
IMO, the shortest/quickest way to improve the situation would be to get back the two splendid seasoned
committers we lost few months ago due avoidable reasons. I am not sure if the reasons are
no longer there, but worth a try, may be.

Jay

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [jdt-dev] Time for mentoring and reviewing

Hi All,

I'm new to JDT. But with my limited time i observed the following
There is not senior members who can spend time on mentoring new contributors and reviewing new contributions. I tried few times to get help, But most of the time people are busy with work. If we want to be success i think we need few member having time for mentoring and code reviews, specially the review which comes from new contributors. Also contributors who are not paid for contributing to Eclipse as well. Because people who are paid come from Orgs like Redhat, IBM like and they do have senior members who can help them out and review code. But for an outsider contributor like me i don't have that luxury other than the community.

Is there away that we can improve this ? I see a lot of things happening in Platform, for me it is more active than JDT. No offence you do a great job on supporting new java versions, But that isn't enough if we want more users using Eclipse. We need fill in the gaps such as gaps in debugger, gaps in performance when it comes to completions and different lookups in JDT.

WDYT ?

Best regards,
Gayan.
