Re: [jdt-core-dev] Current state of BETA_JAVA8

Hi Nick,

The project leadership is taking a close look at that now. Where are we, where can be hope to be by Kepler, by Java 8 launch date, etc. Hopefully in the next few days someone will step in here and give a more detailed assessment. The recent turnover in committers has made it difficult to plan but the community at least deserves a heads-up on what to expect over the coming months leading up to Java 8 GA.

John

If I weren't busy writing a book right now (literally), I'd try to contribute some.

That was my main point of asking http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/t/451298/ (from which Tom posted this thread). My publisher and I need to decide on an IDE for my book, which is covering Java SE 8 and Java EE 7. My main concern was that Kepler (or at least some maintenance release of Kepler before December) was going to at least allow users to set 1.8 as the language level and not mark 1.8 features as syntax errors. Even if Kepler still can't compile Java 8, if you can at least write Java 8 in Kepler that would be a huge help.

Or, is it probably going to be 2014 before Eclipse has any Java 8 support at all?

Thanks,

Nick
