This isn't mandatory. I will change back to 2.0.0. The intent was to allow
2.0.0.1 to be discovered magically as a better plug-in than
org.eclipse.jdt.core 2.0 if people get it as a patch.

Hi folks,
I was noticing that the org.eclipse.jdt.core plugin version was changed to
2.0.0.1. Are you sure you want to do this? In general we are not using 4
part version identifiers. (On the test update site they are used
extensively for testing only. However, the cvs tag is automatically
assigned as the 4th part).
In general, in the HEAD stream we where planning on leaving the plugin and
feature versions at 2.0.0 for the time being. When the change comes we
will change all plugin versions to 2.1. (In the 2.0.1 branch we will
change the plugin and feature versions to be 2.0.1).
Was there a compelling reason for this change?

The nightly build for July 15th, 2002 failed since the plugin version for
org.eclipse.jdt.core (now 2.0.0.1) has not been updated in the
org.eclipse.jdt feature.
Please be reminded that plugin version changes also require the version
updated in any feature.xml which contains the plugin. This is essential
for the builds which require these versions to be exact in order to work.
