Gunnar, Platform may also change their policy over time so you should not pick a schema that assumes Platform will forever work like today

My concern with this proposal is that it destroys the semantic of the baseline. If you increase the year within a "service release" lifetime you loose any semantics about the major version. Right now, it's clear that Mars.1 and Mars.2 use the same base platform. It's not obvious if you change the year in the middle of it.
