Re: [ice-dev] Fwd: FW: Post processing Error using VisIT in ICE

Ah, that would do it. Shehjar, let us know if what Sergiy suggests is your problem and, if so, we can file a bug report and try to look at adding some default behavior there.

Great, at least you get the right solution. Thank you for sending the file.

Shehjar, I think I was able to recreate your error. The highlighted part of the manual that you sent to us with the sequence to visualize the results says

In the Visit Plot Viewer add a new plot by clicking the green “+” and selecting Scalars > Battery_/Temperature to view the temperature distribution in the cell. Double click on the file name in the Visit Plot Viewer. Select pseudocolor from the drop down menu of plot options.

From what I see you missed the ‘Double click on the file name in the Visit Plot Viewer’ part and double clicked the ‘pseudocolor’ in the dropdown menu. This creates the null argument as expected. It doesn’t mean that ICE crashes though. Just nothing happens. If you double click on the [Scalars-/home/batsim/ICEFiles/…/YYY.silo] in the Visit Plot Viewer you will see the result. After that you can select pseudocolor or any other visualizing option from the dropdown menu.

Please let me know if you were able to get it to work.

Sincerely,

Sergiy

Dear Sergiy Kalnaus,

My apologies for a late reply.

I tried running Visit individually and it was running properly and a snapshot of the plot is there in the attachment. Despite that, I get nothing from ICE, each time I click on Pseudocolour after loading the silo files.

I have attached the text file which you requested along this email.

I hope you get more information on what is happening.

Thank you once again.

Warm Regards,
Shehjar

Well, there is of course a chance something is wrong with that particular silo file, but I doubt it. You are certainly using the right directory and the right file. Could you please try launching Visit from command line and see if you can visualize the output? In any of the terminal windows just type ‘visit’ and hit Enter. Then pull the same silo file.

Also, could you please check (email it to us) the ‘TemperatureAverage.txt’ file in ‘THERMAL_Amperes_3/’ directory?

Thanks!

Dear Sergey Kalnaus,

Thanks for your efforts in getting this resolved. I tried to reinstall the BatterySim virtual drive but to no success.

I tried doing everything from the beginning as mentioned in the Appendix B of the Documentation. At my end, it is not showing any plots. Attached along this email is the screenshot of my last step and the messages in the terminal for your perusal.

The silo data I’m taking is from the directory - /home/batsim/ICEFiles/default/jobs/iceLaunch_20150714080709/work/THERMAL__Amperes_3/output-ThermalBattery_silo/

Maybe these are the wrong silo files that I am taking.

I look forward to your response.

Thank you once again.

Warm regards,

Shehjar Kaul

Shehjar,

I just tried to run and visualize the output using the .ova and ICE distributed though the website (the version you have) and all works – I was able to see the output in any of the three formats supported in ICE for Visit (pseudocolor, contour and volume).

One quick question – did you select what to output (Scalars -> Battery_TemperatureP1)? That is, did you double-click on the silo file name or on the variable name?

Thanks!

SK

Thanks Shehjar!

Andrew, can you please try the ICE nightly out in a VIBE install and see if the step in the tutorial works? You should be able to do it in the ResourcePage with a simple right click in the nighty build. If so, we can give Shehjar some instructions on how to get the nightly and work with Sergiy to update the version in VIBE and the tutorial.

Hello Jay,

Thank you for your help!

The part in Appendix B which gave error was when I loaded the silo files and clicked on “Pseudocolour” to visualize the plots. This does not give any output and ICE freezes. Maybe I loaded an empty silo file, or the wrong silo files. I’m not really sure there.

I have attached a snapshot of the step for your perusal and it’s highlighted with yellow. You could review it.

I hope this helps! Thank you for your support.

Warm regards,

Shehjar

Shehjar,

We are not entirely sure which part of the tutorial you were in when this failed. Can you please tell us what step number you were at in Appendix B so that we can try to reproduce it?

Thanks,

Jay

Shehjar,

Thank you very much for your email! I have copied it to the ice-dev list so that the whole ICE team can take a look at it and we can get you back on track.

The important part of your output is the two null pointer exceptions at the bottom. Someone will respond to this email shortly with more guidance.

Jay

Subject: Post processing Error using VisIT in ICE

Hi,

I am new user to the simulation tool of ICE and I have been trying to understand how things work within the ICE tool.

To start, I have been following instructions from the documentation and (almost) everything has worked okay.

But in the appendix B part of starting VisIT within ICE and plotting the silo output files are giving errors and ICE environment freezes after that. I have attached the text from the terminal in which this was running. Perhaps, if you could review this, it would help me debug the tool. There is also a small snapshot of an error message I get after the Virtual Machine starts. Not sure if it has anything to do with ICE.

Looking forward to your feedback and suggestions.

Warm regards,

Shehjar Kaul
