Yes that certainly would solve a bunch of problems -- I don't like having to have that IP message on the downloads -- though not something I have any expertise to offer on. (Besides build.) From perusing LWJGL site a bit it sure seems like there is a ton of work just keeping up with various device driver changes, incompatibilities, etc... Reminds me a bit of SQL and JDBC in the early days esp. when everything was supposed to be API neutral but when it came to reality there was an exception for everything..

You could certainly keep it as part of GEF3D and then as it becomes more mature transition to a separate project.
