Re: [gef-dev] GitHub migration, Oxygen release plans

Hi,

Simply renaming is entirely ok, but then moving another repository to have the same name can be a source of confusion…

I will try to find that out and add respective comments to https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=495455.

If a repository is renamed on Github, some kind of internal redirects are added, so the references (e.g. mirrors remain). We have experienced this by moving repositories between organizations. However, I have no idea what happens if a new repository is created with the name of a renamed repository. I have absolutely no problem with renaming the repository to make it clear what is being developed, etc., but I don’t really like the idea of having a new repository with the old name that is totally independent (in a git sense) from the old one.

I have no problem with changing CI update site urls, but release urls should remain stable (or at least, redirect to the new ones, e.g. with a composite repository), as they can be referred to in existing installations as well.

It would also allow mirrors to properly sync during the quiet week. We could then think of further options (leave the symlinks, replace them with new content, aggregate them in a composite repo) after the Neon release.

We have seen some problems with symlinks, especially wrt mirrors not handling them correctly. However, using composite repositories instead of symlinks is almost as simple, and solves this in a transparent way. Otherwise, I am fine with the proposed structure.

Best regards,
Zoltán
