yes, that is indeed one of the things that will have to be investigated in terms of GEF4. I have created a bug (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=372171) so we can keep track of it.

Now we would like to move to building them as Eclipse 4.x modeled applications.
However, since GEF has a hard dependency to the old 3.x platform, GEF views will only run with the compatibility layer that 4.x provides, which prevents switching to the modeled application approach.

What are the plans for supporting the "pure" 4.x model?
