[epf-dev] SPEM and DSM

Title: SPEM and DSM

Esteemed Colleagues,

Some musings.

I have been curious whether anyone has looked at running a DSM algorithm over a SPEM model of a process.  The idea is that SPEM tasks have input and output parameters and would seem to naturally provide input to DSM analysis.  I assume that task inputs/outputs could be rolled up where tasks are under Activities etc it you wanted to run at higher level of abstraction.

The problem to solve?  Inconsistencies between the task descriptions and how they modelled in the Capability Patterns and Delivery Processes.  The notion (I suppose) is that if you build up a Task model (with inputs and outputs) then you may be able to forward engineer a WBS/Capability Pattern/Delivery Process using the Task inputs/outputs as a constraint.  Certainly, when forming complicated Delivery Processes some analysis support to help "design" the actual coal-face life-cycle model would be useful.  Even if there was a stanadard spreadsheet format to output a task model into (www.dsmweb.org).  The spreadsheet could churn the dependencies after which an import then perhaps a critique engine (maybe decorating the appropriate representations with "whoops") OR generation of at least a draft WBS OR both.

Might require a PBS (Product Breakdown Structure) tool (targeting Delivery Process).
