Re: [emf-dev] EMF SDO and EMF Query

Hi, Anthony,

The "plan" (to use the term loosely) for the EMF Query component is available here:

http://www.eclipse.org/modeling/emf/query/project-info/plan_1_3.html

The "Themes and Priorities" section makes it clear, I think, that contributions will not be turned away but also that there is no interest from the current committer base in developing anything new.  The preamble indicates a trigger for termination review, in the eventuality that no new content is contributed to a 1.3 release by the API Freeze, in which case there wouldn't actually be a 1.3 release.

I am encouraged by IBM's promise to contribute to the development of this component and by other feed-back from the user community indicating its value to them.  So, as I have said before, my preference is to keep this component active with your participation, leaving termination review as a last resort after the conclusion of the Galileo release.  Unless we can ramp up some contributor to committer status in the usual Eclipse way (and this does require a good deal of effort from everyone), this review will be required when the sole committer departs, anyway.

As Ed mentioned, the archival of projects is a process that seems to have some holes and leaves Eclipse's user community in the lurch.  I am hopeful that his discussions with the Foundation will result in changes that protect everybody's interest (Ed, can I help you with this?).

The question of the Release Train is a good one.  As far as I know, no other modeling project requires the Query component, so I suppose that removing it from Galileo may be appropriate.  A bug discussing that is welcome.

Thanks,

Christian

Thanks Ed,

I raised https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=251402 "Remove SDO from Galileo" so we can discuss in the open and those not on the emf-dev mailing list can see and participate in the discussion.

Christian, we can do a Bugzilla for EMF Query? Pretty sure Christian said there was no plan or work items for EMF Query to create a plan, hence this issue.

Cheers...
Anthony

Re: [emf-dev] EMF SDO and EMF Query

Anthony,

I think Christian already said he'd keep Query alive. What does his plan say?

Given the complete silence about terminating SDO, which I interpret as a complete lack of interest in it, I personally think it would be best to remove SDO from Ganymede with an eye to terminating it gracefully. To facilitate this, we need to split the SDO build from the EMF/XSD build. I also don't think it's acceptable that the older builds break as a result of physically removing SDO from CVS though, so I still need to talk to the foundation about a more graceful termination process than what was done with EODM, for example. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on the perspective), eliminating SDO seems to involve more work than keeping in on artificial life support.

The SDO plan theme is "Pull Back" and includes this commentary:
The EMF SDO project has gained little traction.
It may well make sense to phase out support for SDO.
We'll discuss with the community to determine if there is any reason to provide builds for this release or in the future.
At best we will make only minimal changes to stay current with the platform and EMF Core.
Maintenance builds are still important to some clients.
So if there is a community out there who cares about SDO, they need to step forward to express their interest...

Cheers,
Ed
