Re: [emf-dev] ECORE graphical editor

Pierre,

I think the same issues with respect to the use of the GMF runtime components verses Topcased components come up with the UML editing capabilities.   I'm fine with doing something that's tactical and gets us a high function graphical editor quickly along with something more long term strategic that looks to merge the capabilities of GMF and Topcased.   But I need to be sure that both Kenn and Rich are also comfortable with this approach.  Are the things to be committed "as is" the same for both the UML and Ecore editing support?   It sounds like perhaps these common things would be committed as part of the Ecore graphical editing component and then reused in the UML graphical editing component, but will eventually become part of the GMF project.  Does that make sense?

Probably a good approach forward would be for you to present a road map for the direction you'd like this to go in at our next Modeling PMC meeting (two weeks from today).  Then all the interested parties will be present and we can reach agreement.  Rich was still suggesting that Ecore editing might properly belong in MDT, but Kenn feels hat MDT should only include industry standard models.   Perhaps we need to convince Kenn that Ecore is a defacto industry standard. ;-)  In any event, that's a minor organizational point and doesn't really affect the architecture at all.

We can certainly try to attract interested parties to participate in this.  Realistically though, most folks rather enjoy the free ride with occasional tendencies to be back seat drivers.  So from my point of view, I'm thrilled to see Topcased get directly and actively involved in this!  It's yet another important step forward for the community over all.  The more folks who participate the more other folks will feel left out and hence compelled to participate as well...

[emf-dev] ECORE graphical editor

Hello,

as discussed after Eclipse Summit 2006, we would be happy to commit Topcased ECORE graphical editor (you can download it and test it from
http://topcased-mm.gforge.enseeiht.fr/release/update-site and http://gforge.enseeiht.fr/frs/?group_id=28) as an EMP/EMF component.

Concerning the context, let me recall that the goal of Topcased is to build an industrial-strength open source tools set for critical systems and softwares (for example fly by wire systems) development.
It is heavily MDE oriented (UML, SysML, SART, AADL, etc.), is based mainly on Eclipse components, and includes partners from automotive, aeronautical and space industry, some laboratories and schools.

Let's now have a look to the current constraints and facts :
- the current Topcased graphical editors (including ECORE) use some GMF components, but are generated with our own graphical editor generator and are built against some Topcased base components.
- we began some work aiming to get GMF and Topcased graphical editor generators closer, but even if get a common generator quite quickly (this is really optimistic), porting our editors will take some time.
- this activity has not been planned on our side. This means that, at least on the short term (the coming months), it will be difficult to find significant resources to work on that topic.
- having a working ECORE graphical editor and small margins in term of resources, I can not imagine to start a new one from scratch...

So, I see 2 distinct phases :
1- short term : we may commit our editor "as is" or almost. "as is" implies to commit some of our base classes and to rely on Topcased generator.
2- medium/long term : we may port our editor to a future graphical editor generator supporting GMF and Topcased requirements.

Of course, getting some help from other interested people could completely change this approach.

What do you think about all of that ? Any suggestion ?
