[emf-dev] ECORE graphical editor

Hello,

as discussed after Eclipse Summit 2006, we would be happy to commit Topcased ECORE graphical editor (you can download it and test it from http://topcased-mm.gforge.enseeiht.fr/release/update-site and http://gforge.enseeiht.fr/frs/?group_id=28) as an EMP/EMF component.

Concerning the context, let me recall that the goal of Topcased is to build an industrial-strength open source tools set for critical systems and softwares (for example fly by wire systems) development.
It is heavily MDE oriented (UML, SysML, SART, AADL, etc.), is based mainly on Eclipse components, and includes partners from automotive, aeronautical and space industry, some laboratories and schools.

Let's now have a look to the current constraints and facts :
- the current Topcased graphical editors (including ECORE) use some GMF components, but are generated with our own graphical editor generator and are built against some Topcased base components.
- we began some work aiming to get GMF and Topcased graphical editor generators closer, but even if get a common generator quite quickly (this is really optimistic), porting our editors will take some time.
- this activity has not been planned on our side. This means that, at least on the short term (the coming months), it will be difficult to find significant resources to work on that topic.
- having a working ECORE graphical editor and small margins in term of resources, I can not imagine to start a new one from scratch...

So, I see 2 distinct phases :
1- short term : we may commit our editor "as is" or almost. "as is" implies to commit some of our base classes and to rely on Topcased generator.
2- medium/long term : we may port our editor to a future graphical editor generator supporting GMF and Topcased requirements.

Of course, getting some help from other interested people could completely change this approach.

What do you think about all of that ? Any suggestion ?
