First thing would be that you open an enhancement request for EGit on bugs.eclipse.org to store your idea there and work on some suggestions (where you think showing the line numbers  is relevant). Then it will only be a matter of identifying the pieces of code for the choosen UI and to tweak it with this small addition.
Once you have created the bugzilla entry, asking for help as a comment of the ticket seems to be the best solution.
