[edt-dev] Proposing Termination of the EDT Project.

To all interested in EDT,

The Tools PMC has decided it is time to initiate a "Termination Review" for the EDT Project.
The reason is that it has been inactive for nearly two years, and we don't want "dead projects" populating Eclipse.
For more details, see the "Termination Bug", https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=451419

By us proposing this, it is not nearly as "terminal" as it sounds. Though, to be clear, that is the end-result, if no other action occurs.

The way our Eclipse Development Process [1] states it is as follows:
= = = =
The purpose of a termination review is to provide a final opportunity for the committers and/or Eclipse membership to discuss the proposed archiving of a Project. The desired outcome is to find sufficient evidence of renewed interest and resources in keeping the project active.
= = = =

So, the best outcome is if there is "sufficient evidence" found. What's sufficient evidence? Well, it is mostly some group offering to "take it over" ... who the new committers would be, project lead, and, most important, a brief outline of objectives and plans to get the project back on track and headed towards regular builds, regular releases, and being an over-all good Eclipse citizen.

I'll set a deadline of "one month" (December 14) for there to be some "statement of interest" (you can comment in the bug), and after that, we can work on how much extension is needed, to get a more formal "plan" together. We would really like to see new life to the project -- there is a lot of functionality and code there, already -- but at the same time, do now want one person to "sign up" as the only committer, "just because they like playing with it every few months".

So, questions and comments welcome, probably best if you post them to the bug mentioned above, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=451419

Thanks very much,
