In 2.3.2 an embedded object is required to be a non-null if it has any 
reference mappings (OneToOne, OneToMany, ManyToOne, ManyToMany) or 
ElementCollection.

In 2.3.3 (to be released very soon) embedded object that has OneToOne 
(not target foreign key - not "mappedBy" an inverse mapping) mapping is 
allowed to be null.

A (hacky) workaround in 2.3.2 would be setting isNullAllowed flag on the 
mapping AFTER the session has connected using the following 
SessionCustomizer:

public class MyCustomizer implements SessionCustomizer {
    public void customize(Session session) {
        session.getEventManager().addListener(new 
org.eclipse.persistence.sessions.SessionEventAdapter(){
            public void postLogin(SessionEvent event) {
(AggregateObjectMapping)session.getDescriptor(MyClass.class).getMappingForAttributeName("popl")).setIsNullAllowed(true);
            }
        });
    }
}
