I'd open the poll as soon as possible but leave it open until at least
Jan 8 to give people time to ignore it over the holidays.

Unless you're worried about people gaming the system (vote early! vote
often!), in which case open it on Jan 4, and close it on Jan 8.

Either way, +1 for ranked ballots. "First past the post" is such an
old, outdated way to get things done.
