Are you perhaps conflating "shipping with Mars" with "including 
Buildship in the packages and making a big marketing deal about it"?

The question at the moment is the "shipping with Mars" one. Buildship 
will have to demonstrate to the package maintainers that it is of 
sufficient quality to be included in the packages. Of course, I hope 
that it does meet those quality expectations, but that is not the topic 
at hand.

Yes there is risk associated with this decision. But there are also 
risks associated with having another year go by without Gradle support.
