Re: [eclipse.org-planning-council] Mars+1 Naming Issues

Actually, in that train of thought, Eclipse NaN would accomplish the same thing a bit more elegantly. N! might be interpreted as “N not” as well as “N factorial”.

That’s reasonable too, giving the ordinal of the simrel, even if it starts at 12. It’s a pretty big number worth celebrating.

I like what Wayne put out on Twitter, N!. Would be a reasonable transition name signalling we’re having a hard time picking a name.

I was thinking Eclipse 10, but unfortunately 'N' will be the 11th simultaneous release* (if we start counting from Callisto). Eclipse 15 has a cool ring to it, but it will be 2016 by then (although Eclipse did start in 2001, so maybe that's not too bad).

I agree with Doug here, but I think that topic is orthogonal to the current problem of finding a name with our current process.

We may chose to change things in 2016 and it's something to discuss at EclipseCon IMHO

I think the biggest problem is that we keep trying to pick real names of things. Other projects, like Ubuntu, use multiple words that are somewhat meaning-less. But those are really just code words. The real versions are usually numbers, like Ubuntu 14.04. Maybe, that’s better. Just call it Eclipse 15, or Eclipse 2015.

Maybe folks would like the taste of New Eclipse?

(couldn't resist an 80s reference)

Not that I want to make this more complicated, but how about just "N" ?

Hey esteemed planning council members,

We've hit an interesting roadblock with Mars+1 naming:

"We have now completed trademarks reviews for Neptune, Nova, and Neo and our external counsel has strongly advised against using any of those three names. Newton remains a registered trademark of Apple. None of the remaining names on that list are all that appealing, nor did they get much support. Do we need to restart the process?"

Names eliminated:
Neo: 8%
Neptune: 38%
Newton: 11%
Nova: 25%

Names left:
Naboo: 8%
Narvi: 3%
Nash: 2%
Nano: 2%
Nibiru: 2%
Naiad: 1%

This is a first for the planning council as we usually had one of our backups work.

Without making things more complicated, my suggestion is that we do a lazy consensus poll potentially work down the list based on votes or just pick a couple of favorite names from what's left. If we go simply by votes, Naboo and Narvi are next on the list.

What do you think?
